Questions for the self....

Where will you be in 10 years?
I utterly hate this question. I don’t like this expectation that I should have an idea on this and I feel crap for not really knowing. Well, 10 years from now I’ll be 29 (going on 30!). I’d hope that by this stage I’ll have moved up the ladder and be in a more senior design position where I get to do creative work while also overlooking larger projects, because I find I like keeping track of project movement and keeping it up to date/letting the clients in on the progress. I like knowing what’s going on in the big picture while also being able to contribute.

What do you want to be doing in 10 years?
I want to continue making creative works, preferably in the digital realms though rather than traditional media, which at times I find a little frustrating with the slow movement it seems to have. That said, I’d like to work in the advertising industry, creating works that are going to be seen by a greater audience. Working with photography as well, which is very much a part of the advertising, would also be something that I would quite enjoy.

How will you work this year to get you there?
Considering the design project at the end of the year, I want to look into ways that advertisements can interacted with and made fun to look at or find. I find that the expectation that ads are always flat, 2D and completely disconnected from the world and lifestyles we inhabit. I want people to have an experience, no matter how small, that allows them connect more with whats out there. It would good to develop that could be used by anyone, not just an well known corporate identity.

Who/what inspires/motivates you?
I find that any creative work that I find intriguing or clever in some way instantly makes me think “I want to come up with ideas like that for others”. I’m inspired by the people I surround myself with because they all work in different areas on various projects that I wish I could also work on, which pushes me to want to go into areas to create amazing things.

Who are the people that you want to see your work? (considering the end of year exhibition)
I’ll show everyone who is interested. I want to be able to show my work and feel proud of it 100%, knowing that its all come together in the end. I can only hope that they will be impressed by the work.

How will you “mark” your work in the real world? (critique it as such)
I guess I’ll continue to compare my work to what is being created out there by others and stack it up against them. It will also keep me update to date with the changes and trends in the industry. I want people to take something away from what I create, I want it to have an impact, no matter what medium. When my work does that, I’ll be happy.

What will you use as a benchmark for your work?
When I find a work that makes me look at something different or impresses me, I want to create something like that. I’ll look to others people work to see what they’re developing to do this and see what I can do to compete with that.
